Reshuffle in Egypt
From People in Power
Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif and his government were dismissed on 29 January 2011, after five days of widespread popular protest, in which more than 50 people were killed by security forces. The same day President Mubarak appointed a vice president for the first time under his presidency, and named Ahmed Shafiq as prime minister. Most of the members of the previous administration were reappointed to their ministerial posts on 31 January, but new ministers of the interior and of finance were named. As the protests continued, Mubarak announced on 1 February that he would not stand for re-election in the forthcoming presidential election due in September.
